There are no plans to raise fares on PH trains, according to a DOTr executive.

MANILA, Philippines β€” In the wake of rising gasoline prices, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) reassured travelers on Thursday that the government has no intentions to raise fares on the Light Rail Transit-1, LRT-2, Metro Rail Transit-3, and the Philippine National Railway.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade has given particular instructions not to increase railway tickets when the public experiences simultaneous price rises on goods, according to DOTr Undersecretary for Railways Timothy John Batan in a Laging Handa public briefing.

“Alam po natin, meron nga po tayong nangyayari ngayon na pagtaas ng presyo sa langis na maaari pong makaapekto dito sa presyo ng ating ibang mga bilihin kung kaya’t sinisigurado na sa utos

He stated that the railway sector will maintain current fare rates and focus on ensuring the riding public’s adherence to minimum health protocols, particularly the imposition of the DOTr’s “7 Commandments,” which aim to ensure the observance of minimum health protocols such as proper face mask wear, maintaining physical distance, prohibition of eating and talking, among others.

The DOTr railway sector has been conducting antigen testing and immunization for commuters in selected regions in order to combat the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19).

Since February, the DOTr has conducted roughly 200 tests each week on average, with no positive cases to date.

“Sa linya ng ating mga tren, nasa 0 na po ang ating positivity rate natin, pero ipinagpapatuloy po natin itong antigen testing na ito, dahil ginagamit po natin ito na parang indicator para makita natin kung magkakaroon po uli ng mga kaso ng Co

With the use of the DOTr, 5,526 doses of Covid-19 vaccination were delivered.

Unvaccinated people should get vaccinated, according to Batan, who added that marshals will be on hand to help fill out consent forms and provide information on available schedules and approved stations.

Meanwhile, DOTr-MRT3 Director of Operations Michael Capati reminded passengers that trains are safe even when they are fully loaded.

However, despite the Alert Level 1, he claims that typical rail usage has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels.

The LRT-1 has an average ridership of 182,000, barely half of its pre-pandemic count of 400,000; the LRT-2 has an average ridership of 59,000 (160,000 prior); and the MRT-3 has an average passenger of 220,000. (270,000 to 300,000).
