Revenues from e-sabong: PRRD

MANILA, Philippines – On Thursday, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte stated that e-sabong, or online cockfighting, generates revenue that can be used to fund the government’s Universal Health Care (UHC) program.

Duterte reiterated in a speech in Palo, Leyte, that the government has earned over PHP640 million monthly from online gambling activity since January.

“E-sabong contributes PHP642 million to the government each month. It generates billions of dollars for the government in a single year,” he explained.

Apart from funding hospitals and medicine, he said, e-sabong revenues could also be used to fund education and infrastructure.

Duterte stated that temporarily shutting down businesses operated by operators who have committed no violations would be unjust.

“It is not the management’s fault…it is the fault of evil men doing wrong,” he added.

He stated that it was best to leave the investigation of the disappearance of 31 “sabungeros” to law enforcement (cockfighting enthusiasts).

“Let the police deal with the situation,” he added.

Duterte, in a prerecorded Talk to the People, address aired Wednesday, pleaded with lawmakers to respect his decision to allow e-sabong to continue operations due to the government’s “financial constraints.”

“Ang pag-asa ko sa mga congressmen, huwag niyong anuhin iyan, kumikita iyan.” Except for PAGCOR and ‘yung mga malalaking player, there is no reason to suspend it. It generates revenue. Nobody benefits from its operations, except for PAGCOR and key players in the e-sabong industry),” Duterte stated.

Malacanang directed the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct investigations into the disappearances of individuals involved in e-sabong and submit their findings to the President’s Office (OP) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) within 30 days.

Additionally, the memo directed the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) to investigate e-sabong operators for possible violations.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government previously stated that authorities have identified at least eight suspects in the sabungeros’ disappearances.

DILG Secretary Eduardo Ao stated that they will seek assistance from the courts in serving arrest warrants on the suspects and determining their involvement in the 31 missing sabungero cases as soon as sufficient evidence is gathered.
