The government has been asked to pursue profiteers in the face of skyrocketing fuel prices.

MANILA, Philippines – Guillermo Eleazar, a senatorial candidate for the Partido Reporma, urged the government on Tuesday to protect consumers from unreasonable increases in the prices of basic goods in the face of soaring oil prices.

“Damay ang presyo ng pagkain gaya ng baboy, manok, at mga gulay dito sa patuloy na pagtaas ng presyo ng langis sa merkado. Bilang mga pangunahing pangangailangan, dapat aksyunan ng DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) ito dahil kawawa naman ang ating mga kababayan na umaaray sa pagtaas ng mga bilihin (Food prices such as pork, chicken, and vegetables are significantly impacted by the continued rise in oil prices on the international market. As these are essential goods, the DTI should investigate these price increases immediately, as our countrymen are now being harmed), “In a statement, he stated.

Eleazar said that among the measures that should be implemented in collaboration with local government units (LGUs) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) are random inspections of grocery stores and public markets to ensure compliance with the DTI’s suggested retail price (SRP) and checks on weighing scales to ensure that customers are not overcharged.

He stated that the PNP and LGUs have aided the DTI in enforcing laws relating to profiteering and other violations of the DTI’s mandated laws.

Eleazar stated that by conducting random inspections on a regular basis, traders will be discouraged from taking advantage of consumers.

He also urged LGUs and the DTI to strengthen the system for consumers to file complaints against dishonest traders.

The DTI announced last week that it is considering revising the most recent SRP list to reflect the impact of rising oil prices on the costs of basic goods.

This occurred as some manufacturers sought to increase the suggested retail price of their products.

The DTI published the current SRP list on January 27, 2019, revising the August 29, 2021 price bulletin.

Meanwhile, Eleazar backed calls for a review of the Rice Tariffation Law (RTL), claiming that it had a detrimental effect on the livelihoods of local farmers.

The measure was discussed during the Commission on Elections’ Pilipinas Debates, with several candidates calling for its repeal.

“Kailangan reviewhin nang maigi itong batas na ito at amyendahan o i-repeal kung kinakailangan dahil hindi ito ang unang beses na nakarinig tayo ng negatibong epekto ng batas sa ating magsasaka (This law needs to be thoroughly reviewed to determine whether it “Eleazar explained.

Additionally, he stated that the Philippines’ rice production should increase, as the country is an agricultural one.

The RTL eliminated quantitative restrictions on rice imports and imposed a 35% tariff on rice imports from Southeast Asian neighbors.

This means that private traders can import rice freely as long as they obtain a phytosanitary permit from the Bureau of Plant Industry and pay the applicable tariff on shipments from neighboring Southeast Asian countries.
