MANILA, Philippines – The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) wing led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi formally endorsed former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s presidential candidacy in the upcoming May 9 elections on Tuesday.

“Nagsama-sama kami (We come together) to officially announce our endorsement of Bongbong Marcos Jr.’s candidacy today,” Cusi said during a press conference.

Cusi stated that the PDP-Laban adopted Resolution No. 26, Series of 2022, endorsing Marcos as the “candidate whose platform is most aligned with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s development program.”

“It is not a decision made by an individual, but by the party,” Cusi explained. “We went through the process in accordance with our Constitution and by-laws.”

Cusi emphasized that the bloc chose Marcos as its presidential candidate because his “vision of governance” is most compatible with the PDP-11-point Laban’s agenda, ensuring the continuity of Duterte’s change agenda.

The PDP-Laban has adopted the 11-point Agenda for Continuity, which includes the fight against corruption, poverty eradication, advancement of peace and order, eradicating the pandemic, defeating communist terrorism, sustaining economic growth, job creation, strengthening national defense and foreign relations, educational reforms, decentralization and local government empowerment, and charter change and federalism.

Marcos received the “most endorsements” from PDP Laban’s “several local councils,” including Ilocos Sur, La Union, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Zambales, Batangas, Laguna, Quezon, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro, Camarines Norte, Masbate, Aklan, Negros Occidentales, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Zamboanga del Sur, Davao

Marcos was also endorsed by the councils of Caloocan City, Malabon City, Mandaluyong City, Pasay City, Paranaque City, San Juan City, Valenzuela City, Malolos City, Ormoc City, and San Pedro City.

On January 21, the national executive committee of the PDP-Laban announced its support for vice-presidential candidate Sara Duterte “based on her credentials, advocacies, and vision for our country,” but made no mention of who it would support for president.

Cusi previously stated that the PDP-Laban faction will endorse a presidential candidate who will continue President Duterte’s legacy programs.

“What the country needs now, particularly in the midst of the pandemic, is a presidential candidate who will continue President Duterte’s tapang at malasakit (courage and compassion) brand of leadership,” Cusi said.

President Duterte, according to acting presidential spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, has not yet seen a compelling reason to endorse a presidential candidate.

During his March 19 Facebook Live segment, “Ask Me Anything, Anywhere,” Andanar maintained that Duterte has not yet chosen his preferred successor.

“Ang ating alam, ang sabi ni Pangulong Duterte, wala siyang ie-endorse (What we know is that President Duterte will not endorse [any presidential candidate]), unless there is a compelling reason to do so. If there is a sapat na dahilan for endorsing a candidate, niya gagawin. However, there is no compelling reason to endorse a candidate at the moment. However, there is no compelling reason at the moment),” Andanar stated.
