TESDA scholars now have the option of receiving allowance via GCash

MANILA, Philippines – The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) now offers scholars the option of receiving their allowances via the e-wallet GCash, following the agency’s renewal of its partnership with operator Mynt’s subsidiary, G-Xchange, Inc. (GXI).

TESDA Secretary Isidro Lapea stated during a program held at the TESDA Women’s Center in Bicutan, Taguig City on Wednesday that one of the challenges they have encountered is the slow disbursement of scholars’ allowances.

“We investigated and discovered that GCash is the solution. Allowances could be transferred automatically to scholars’ (GCash) accounts, just as salaries are transferred to our Land Bank accounts. Significant time and effort savings are possible “‘He stated.

In 2021, a pilot GCash disbursement was made to scholars in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Regions 4-A, 7, and 11.

According to TESDA data, between March and December 2021, 210 scholars from the four regions received their allowances via GCash. TESDA is targeting 379,003 scholars or enrollees in 2022 through the nationwide rollout.

“The four-region pilot study was a success. We anticipate that the majority of you will choose to use GCash as we launch this (nationwide rollout) today. We recognize that this cannot be 100% (of the scholars), as there are those who live in remote areas and do not have access to the internet “Lapena clarified that this is not a requirement and that scholars may continue to pay their allowances in other ways.

The TESDA chief stated that he is aware of the scholars’ PHP160 daily allowance and expressed his desire to improve people’s lives through training.

Meanwhile, Cathlyn Pavia, assistant vice president of GXI, expressed gratitude to TESDA for selecting GCash as its fintech partner.

Pavia noted that cash distribution was critical during the pandemic, and GCash provided a secure, quick, and easy method of disbursing scholars’ allowances.

“We have already begun expanding (the rollout) across the country. Apart from secure disbursement, scholars can use (the GCash app) to save, invest, insure, and borrow money.” Pavia noted that GCash is constantly innovating to improve its services.

There are currently 55 million registered GCash users.
