Andanar is a believer in the validity of pre-election polls.

MANILA – Acting Presidential Spokesperson Martin Andanar is confident in the accuracy of pre-election polls.

In a Tuesday interview with the Daily Tribune’s “Straight Talk” program, Andanar was asked which of the top three presidential candidates would most likely receive President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s endorsement.

Andanar did not directly respond to the question, but did note that pre-election polls provide insight into respondents’ preferences.

“Ganito sasagutin ko: Ako ay naniniwala sa mga surveys, be it Pulse Asia or SWS, iyong mga leading research firms natin. Naniniwala ako sa kanilang paraan, nila’s survey system – quantitative, qualitative (This is how I will respond: I believe in surveys, whether they are conducted by Pulse Asia or SWS, our leading polling firms. I believe in their methodology, system, and approach to conducting the survey (quantitative and qualitative),” he stated.

He added, however, that it is unknown whether the survey results will be accurate in predicting who will be elected after voters cast their ballots.

“Tingnan natin kung sino ang talagang nasa pinaka-one, two, three sa larong ito. At (Let us determine who is truly the number one, two, and three players in this game. Additionally, miracles do occur. Therefore, say a prayer or two,” he continued.

The results of a Pulse Asia survey conducted from Feb. 18 to 23, the first major poll conducted since official campaigns began on Feb. 8, showed that former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. maintained a commanding lead of 60%, followed by Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo (15%) and Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domingo (10 percent).

The ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) adopted a resolution endorsing Marcos’ candidacy formally on Monday.

Andanar, on the other hand, stated that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, chairman of the PDP-Laban, has yet to make an official announcement regarding his preferred successor.

Duterte has stated numerous times that he is not endorsing or supporting any presidential bid “at the moment.”

Duterte stated in a March 11 television interview that the country’s next president should be “compassionate and decisive” as well as a “lawyer.”

Political analysts previously stated that despite strong leads, other candidates may be able to overcome them.

Senator and presidential candidate Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao previously stated that his dismal poll ratings do not dampen his spirits, noting that Duterte also trailed in polls when he ran in 2016.

Duterte won the 2016 presidential election with 16 million votes, despite finishing third or fourth in pre-election polls.
