The PH Covid-19 response serves as a ‘vindication’ of Duterte’s administration

MANILA, Philippines – The country’s response to Covid-19 is “on track,” a Palace official said, citing a decline in both Covid-19 cases and hospital admissions.

“Certainly, we are on the right track. The fact that we have one of the lowest mortality rates in Covid at the utilization rate of our hospital beds, ibig sabihin walang pasyente, maayos lahat (and our hospital bed utilization rate is low, there are few patients. It means that everything is going swimmingly),” acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar said during Tuesday’s “Straight Talk” program on the Daily Tribune.

Andanar characterized the Philippines’ improved response to Covid-19 as a “vindication” of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and his administration.

“Unlike some of our Southeast Asian neighbors, we have a Covid policy. At the time of this writing, mayroong surge doon, may surge sa kabila. However, we see that there are surges there, and we are reopening our economy. As such, this is vindication for the tough policies we implemented over the last two years,” he added.

In a pre-recorded Talk to the People broadcast on March 7, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III stated that Duterte’s leadership and Filipinos’ adherence to health protocols have resulted in the Philippines having fewer Covid-19 infections than other Southeast Asian countries.

Duque stated that other countries are experiencing an increase in cases now because the Philippines experienced a surge in cases earlier than its Southeast Asian neighbors due to the Omicron-variant.

The Philippines had the second lowest Covid-19 average daily attack rate (ADAR) in Southeast Asia, with an ADAR of 0.43, according to data from the OCTA Research group.

ADAR is an abbreviation for the number of infected individuals per 100,000 population.

The weekly Covid-19 caseload report from the Department of Health indicated a total of 3,572 new Covid-19 cases from March 14 to 20, a decrease of 13% from the previous week.

This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in the United States to 3,674,694.

Several areas of the country are currently on Alert Level 1, which means there are no restrictions on indoor or outdoor capacity but that minimum public health standards are maintained.

The government is currently debating whether to downgrade other regions of the country to alert level zero.
