The Comelec’s decision on Marcos’ DQ cases is expected in April.

MANILA, Philippines โ€“ The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc decision on the disqualification cases filed against presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is expected late next month, the poll body said Thursday.

Comelec Commissioner George Garcia stated that the motions for reconsideration (MRs) filed by petitioners opposing the former senator’s candidacy are being expedited.

“The chairman (Saidamen Pangarungan) is committing to a decision by the en banc before the end of April,” he said during a press briefing.

Garcia admitted that he did not attend the session in which the disqualification cases were discussed.

“The consolidated cases, as well as the case with motions for reconsideration, will be decided prior to the electionsโ€ฆby the end of April,” he stated. “The first week of April will be the earliest; the third week of April will be the latest.”

Previously, the Comelec’s First and Second Divisions dismissed a total of six cases against Marcos for “lack of merit.”

The petitioners each filed MRs with the Comelec en banc.

Meanwhile, Garcia stated that Senate Minority Leader Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, who recently resigned from his political party, Partido Reporma, will not be considered as an independent candidate in the May 9 elections.

“Whichever party you were affiliated with at the time of your candidacy filing remains. CONA (Certificate of Nomination and Acceptance) remains with you. It makes no difference if your affiliation changes following the filing of your candidacy “Garcia continued.

Lacson resigned from the Partido Reporma on Thursday after his party decided to endorse another presidential candidate.

Pantaleon Alvarez, president of the Partido Reporma and Davao del Norte Representative, has endorsed Vice President Leni Robredo’s presidential bid despite admitting that Lacson is the “most qualified” candidate to be the country’s next president.
