MANILA – Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula has reminded the faithful of the need of praying to the Lord in order to live in peace.

“Prayer is the most fundamental act of peace-building because true peace is heaven’s gift to earth; peace can only come from God, it cannot be produced by mere human achievement,” he said during the Mass at the Manila Cathedral on Friday evening commemorating the consecration of Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Advincula went on to say that the gathering is in support of the people of Russia and Ukraine who are caught in the middle of the conflict, as well as those who are involved in other forms of violence in many parts of the world, including the Philippines.

“If we desire permanent peace for all, we need God to provide us with the peace that this world cannot provide; true peace is the absolute goodness and prosperity of the full individual and of all people,” he continued.

Weapons and violence, according to the leader of the Archdiocese of Manila, should never be used as a solution to a conflict, but rather discussion should be encouraged in order to achieve a peaceful society.

During the Mass, Archbishop Charles John Brown, the Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Antonio Tobias, priests, nuns, religious, laity, and representatives from many countries in the Philippines were also present.

Following the Holy Mass and the Act of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a procession and recitation of the Holy Rosary was performed in Plaza Roma with the singular intention of world peace, particularly in Ukraine and Russia.

The Philippines’ Catholic Bishops Conference (CBCP) also engaged in the devotion of Russia and Ukraine to Mary’s pure heart.

The church gathering was held in response to His Holiness Pope Francis’ request.

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Millions of Ukrainians fled to neighboring European countries for safety a month later, with thousands of them killed.
