MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Labor and Employment has awarded PHP12.14 million in livelihood and emergency employment assistance to more than 2,000 people in Ormoc City (DOLE).

According to a news release issued on Saturday, livelihood funding of PHP3 million were used to purchase motorized bancas and fishing gear for 100 recipients, while the PHP2.88 million livelihood support budget was used to fund 96 beneficiaries’ “negokart” (business cart) operations.

“It is in the government’s interest that informal laborers, whether in times of crisis or not, are able to receive the livelihood assistance they require for the betterment of their personal lives as well as their communities.” During the distribution, DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III said, “We are happy to be given the opportunity to provide assistance and react to their need for help.”

Bello also helped pay wages to 1,849 disadvantaged/displaced workers through the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program, a community-based package of assistance that provides emergency employment for displaced workers, underemployed, and seasonal workers for a minimum of 10 days.

The overall payout was almost PHP6 million, with each employee earning PHP3,250 after completing 10 days of labor.

“I guarantee you that the Department of Labor’s programs will continue to assist our low-wage workers,” Bello stated.

Overseas Employees Welfare Administration aid programs provided PHP255,000 to 34 overseas Filipino workers and their families.
