MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte celebrated his 77th birthday Monday, receiving warm wishes from the populace he has vowed to serve.

Vendors, commuters, security guards, and construction workers interviewed by the Philippine News Agency (PNA) expressed satisfaction with the president’s performance, stating that they noticed positive changes during his administration.

Vicente Rosete, 48, of Tandang Sora in Quezon City, said six years of service is insufficient for a hardworking president like Duterte because he has done an excellent job.

“Sa akin mga 99 percent, siya aprub. Among the projects Rosete lauded is the administration’s massive infrastructure program, “Build, Build, Build.”

Rosete stated that once the projects are completed, he and many others will benefit.

He also expressed gratitude to Duterte for encouraging security agencies to pay their employees the legal minimum wage.

“Malaki talaga ang naitulong ni Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte sa aming mga security guard, kasi naging minimum talaga. Although there are some security agencies that do not pay the minimum wage, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte was able to assist us when he encouraged security agencies to pay us the minimum wage. There were security agencies that did not even provide minimum wage, but he was able to assist us because he encouraged them to adjust our pay),” Rosete explained.

“Sa iyong kaarawan, binabati kita mahal na pangulo. Sana ay dagdagan o pahabain ang iyong buhay para makatulong ka pa rin sa mga Pilipino. I wish you a long and prosperous life so that you may continue to serve the people). Mr. President, happy birthday, sir. “I appreciate it,” he stated.

According to 51-year-old construction worker Alexander Sata, Duterte and his team handled the pandemic well, implementing unpopular but necessary measures to protect Filipinos from the coronavirus.

The Philippines currently has one of the lowest daily coronavirus cases in Southeast Asia.

Vilma Gandarino, 55, a vendor, said Duterte’s administration did an excellent job and she was appreciative of the Ayuda during the pandemic.

“Maganda ng pamamalakad ni Pangulong Duterte sa ating bansa (President Duterte’s administration performed admirably). “Malaking tulong ‘yung natanggap namin mula sa kanya, sa gobyerno, kagaya ng mga ayuda, malaki na rin ‘yun, mahalaga na rin ‘yun sa amin,” she said.

“Happy birthday, pangulo, and tsaka lagi kang mag iingat.” God bless, po (happy birthday, beloved president, take care of yourself always, and God bless).”

Danilo Santi, 54, a teacher, expressed gratitude to Duterte for signing the Salary Standardization Law, which altered the salary schedule for civilian government employees and added benefits to government employees, including public school teachers.

“Mahusay, umunlad ang Pilipinas, naiba yung kalakaran, tapos natupad ang malaking problema ng bawat departamento, so umunlad talaga ang bansa sa pagiging pangulo ni Pangulong Duterte,” he said.

Jobeth Cabile and Dolores Likwido, both commuters, agreed that they feel more at ease walking the city streets at night.

To them, the Duterte administration’s anti-illegal drugs campaign was a success.

“Mahal ka namin Presidente Rodrigo Duterte, maraming salamat sa nagawa ninyo sa inyong termino,” Cabile said.

Duterte will step down in June.
