A nonagenarian weaver offers his entire lot to help keep traditional weaving alive.

CITY OF LAOAG – Magdalena Gamayo, a 97-year-old Ilocano master weaver in the rural village of Lumbaan, Pinili town, is dedicating a section of her family’s land in her homeland to ensure that the “inabel” weaving tradition will continue long after she is gone.

Members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP or Provincial Board) unanimously approved the proposed conditional deed of donation of a 290-square-meter Gamayo lot in favor of the Ilocos Norte government on Monday, thanks to a provincial resolution certified as urgent by Ilocos Norte Gov. Matthew Joseph Manotoc.

Provincial legal counsel Erme Labayog announced Monday that the land will be developed as a permanent weaving center dedicated to conserving and strengthening the Ilokano weaving culture, as agreed by all sides.

According to Xavier Ruiz, senior tourism operations officer, this will open the way for the Department of Public Works and Highways to expedite the construction of the weaving center, which is expected to cost PHP10 million.

The project intends to boost the province’s inabel industry, which will help micro, small, and medium-sized businesses.

He added, “It will also act as a learning place and an exhibit hall for Abel products.”

The government of Ilocos Norte allocated PHP4 million for the development of a weaving center in Pinili town in 2019, however it was not completed for whatever reason. However, Ilocos Norte 2nd District Rep. Angelo Marcos Barba launched the budget approval process in support of the local weavers of Pinili town and to ensure the industry’s survival in the next years.

Pinili people have taken pride in the town’s loom weaving business over the years, as well as the presence of “Lola Magdalena,” who continues to inspire and pass on her loom weaving skills to the next generation.

To promote inabel products, the government of Ilocos Norte, through its Provincial Tourism Office, continues to develop new inabel items.

This is in collaboration with local designers, who will show off their one-of-a-kind talent by producing gowns, casual wear, and sportswear inspired by inabel textiles.
