In Marcos’ bailiwick, Robredo is courting voters.

PALO, Leyte – Vice President and presidential hopeful Leni Robredo has conceded that campaigning in Leyte, where local government leaders have chosen former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as their candidate, is a major obstacle for her supporters.

On Tuesday, Robredo addressed a throng of over 5,000 people at the Government Center in this city, urging volunteers to knock on every door in the province to spread the message of “Gobyernong Tapat” (honest government).

During the rally, which took place just two weeks after Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla openly expressed his support for Marcos, no incumbent local officials were present.

Pintados Foundation President Eugene Tan, former Tacloban councilors Jerry Uy and Niel Glova, Tacloban Councilor Jose Mario Bagulaya, and former Leyte governor Mimiette Bagulaya are among the supporters of Robredo during the gathering.

Northern Samar Governor Edwin Ongchuan and Eastern Samar Governor Edwin Ongchuan were also present.

“I understand how difficult it is for you to organize demonstrations here, but you have come to show your support.” Hope has a face like this. “This is the face of love for our nation,” Robredo told the crowd, which was primarily made up of young people.

The Leyte chapter of the Robredo People’s Council coordinated the noontime rally.

Despite losing in Leyte and the entire Eastern Visayas during the vice-presidential election in 2016, Robredo said she has been implementing projects in several of the region’s villages.

Only Eastern Visayas, out of the three Visayas regions, saw Robredo lose by 38,000 votes to Marcos.

Marcos’ victory in Eastern Visayas might be credited to his mother, former first lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos, a Leyte native.

In 2016, Marcos won Leyte and the nearby province of Biliran, while Robredo won three provinces in Samar.

On Monday, Robredo arrived in Samar province to court voters in the cities of Calbayog, Catbalogan, and Northern Samar.

She went to Maslog, a small village in Eastern Samar, on Tuesday before travelling to Palo.

At Eastern Samar, she also spoke to supporters in Naval, Biliran, Ormoc City, and Borongan City.
