In Negros, the government hospital launches the first human milk bank.

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – On Tuesday, the Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital (TLJPH) in Silay City launched the island’s first human milk bank.

The provincial administration of Negros Occidental has joined with the Rotary Club of Metro Bacolod to give breast milk to newborns.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson praised Rotary and its chapters for working with the province to achieve a variety of objectives.

“This milk bank is a reaction to the growing need for breast milk, not just for optimum nourishment, but most significantly, to save the lives of Negrense babies, especially the most fragile and premature,” Lacson stated at the inauguration.

Breastfeeding moms’ milk will be collected at the milk bank, which will be pasteurized and stored properly.

The milk will be provided free of charge to infants whose moms are unable to produce enough breast milk after giving birth.

The majority of individuals who will benefit will come from impoverished families.

TLJPH’s chief, Dr. Mary Ann Maestral, said the organization has long advocated for the formation of a milk bank, but that the initiative has been difficult to implement.

She went on to say that it was only until the province teamed up with the Rotary Club to establish the facility that it became a reality.

“Many moms make excessive amounts of breast milk, while others produce insufficient amounts. We have the most patients who are giving birth (in the province). Even before the milk bank, people who had excess milk would share it with other babies “Maestral was added to the mix.

She stated that premature babies will mostly benefit from the milk supply, emphasizing that if they are fed mother’s milk, they will have a better chance of surviving.

Rotary Club of Metro Bacolod president Jeinz Kreistein Salgado, coordinator of the human milk bank project; Dr. Girlie Pinongan, head of the Hospital Operations Department; Dr. Jean Alojado, head of the TLJPH Pediatrics Department; and former congressman and provincial economic consultant Alfredo Benitez were among those who attended the inauguration.
