MANILA – The Board of Investments (BOI) has stepped up its collaboration with academia to solve the country’s skills and employment mismatch.

BOI said in a statement released Wednesday that it inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Adamson University (AdU) on March 29 to form a collaboration focused on fostering industry development opportunities.

Trade Undersecretary Ceferino Rodolfo and AdU president Fr. Marcelo Manimtim led the signing.

BOI and AdU agreed to collaborate on technology pitching, reverse technology pitching, research and development consultations, and capacity-building initiatives for academic staff and students as part of the cooperation.

“This will also help our faculty and students understand the various industries—their needs and challenges—and potentially adapt to future skills requirements as well as close gaps in industry value chains to achieve our shared objectives of industry development for quality employment of our graduates,” Rodolfo said.

Job mismatch is one of the most important concerns in the labor market, according to the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd), and recent technological developments could contribute to a higher unemployment rate in the country.

This could be addressed by upgrading school curriculum as well as retooling and upskilling the workforce.
