The conflict in Ukraine between Russia and Ukraine is increasing the global food crisis, according to a diplomat.

WASHINGTON, D.C. β€” According to US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, Russia’s war in Ukraine is intensifying a worldwide food crisis already exacerbated by coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Sherman said Russian warships are restricting access to Ukraine’s ports, thus cutting off grain exports, and are apparently delaying roughly 94 ships carrying food for the world market from reaching the Mediterranean, speaking at a UN Security Council meeting.

“As Russia chokes off Ukrainian exports, food prices are already exploding in poor and middle-income nations,” she added, adding that wheat prices had climbed between 20% and 50% across the Middle East and Africa so far this year.

She went on to say that over half of all Ukrainians are unable to obtain food and that the war’s impacts on food security are felt “far beyond Ukraine’s borders.”

Sherman stated that the United States is “especially concerned” about nations such as Lebanon, Pakistan, Libya, Tunisia, Yemen, and Morocco, who she claims rely substantially on Ukrainian imports to feed their people.

She responded to Russian assertions that the US and other sanctions placed after the war began had increased food costs by saying that sanctions aren’t keeping grain from leaving Ukraine’s ports, but Russian President Vladimir “Putin’s war” is.

“Neither the US nor our allies and partners have imposed sanctions on Russia’s own food and agricultural exports,” she continued. “President Putin bears complete responsibility for the war in Ukraine and its consequences for world food security.”

Russia’s assault on Ukraine, which began on February 24, has sparked international indignation, with the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom, among others, imposing harsh economic sanctions on Moscow.

Hundreds of international businesses have also halted operations in Russia.

According to UN estimates, at least 1,179 civilians have been killed and 1,860 injured in Ukraine, with the exact tally likely to be much higher.

According to the UN refugee agency, more than 3.9 million Ukrainians have fled to various European nations, with millions more displaced within the country.
