MALOLOS CITY, BULACAN — In this province, the National Food Authority (NFA) has begun purchasing fresh palay as part of its buffer stocking program.

NFA-Bulacan manager Sheryl Gamboa said in a statement on Tuesday that they are aiming for 64,000 bags of palay for the current dry cropping season.

According to Gamboa, they also have trucks that can pick up the farmers’ palay crops.

Meanwhile, as the height of the harvest season approaches, the NFA’s regional office in Central Luzon is collaborating with local government units (LGUs) on their palay procurement program, owing to higher commercial palay prices compared to government rates.

The region is known as the country’s rice granary.

NFA-Central Luzon regional director Jonathan Yazon stated that they had only been able to obtain a little amount of palay for their buffer stocking program so far.

He attributed this to rice dealers’ higher pricing, which varies from PHP19.50 to PHP21 per kg for clean and dry palay, as opposed to the NFA’s PHP19.00 per kilo for the same type of rice crop.

“We’re collaborating with our LGUs if they are interested in adding incentives through our Palay Marketing Assistance Program for Legislators and Local Government Units,” Yazon added, “to augment their buffer stockpiles during the height of the palay harvest season in April and May.”

According to him, local governments and legislators can enter into a marketing agreement with NFA and provide a premium amount that will be added to the current NFA support price.

“They can obtain their own buffer stockpiles and store them in our warehouses,” Yazon noted.
