MANILA, Philippines — According to a health official, the government is still waiting for a recommendation from government specialists before distributing Sinovac’s coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccination to children aged 6 and up.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Sinovac’s CoronaVac an emergency use authorization on March 11, allowing the Chinese vaccine to be used for pediatric vaccination.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire claimed in an online media forum that the essential documentation had previously been submitted to the Health Technology Assessment Council (HTAC), an independent advisory body established under the Universal Health Care Act.

The mission of the HTAC is to conduct technology appraisals in the Philippine healthcare system, determining their clinical and economic benefits in order to enhance overall health outcomes and ensure justice, equity, and long-term coverage for all.

“In the interim, hanggang di pa lumalabas ang ating mga eksperto, hindi pa makakapag-issue ng guidelines ang DOH at yan ang last step na meron tayo,” Vergeire remarked.

She went on to say that delivering Sinovac to youngsters would have to wait until the Department of Health issued implementation guidelines.

Ana Ong-Lim, a member of the Department of Health Technical Advisory Group and a pediatrician, stated the experts’ recommendation is based on the safety data and efficacy of the Covid-19 vaccination in question at the same conference.

“Please take note, lagi natin inuuna ang safety kesa effectiveness kasi wala naman pupuntahan ang bakunang mabisang-mabisa kung hindi naman siya ligtas,” she said.

Both factors are evaluated by various parties before a vaccine is finally put out, according to Ong-Lim, thus the evaluation process appears to be longer.
