The bird flu outbreak in Luzon has been brought under control.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” The Department of Agriculture (DA) told the public on Tuesday that the bird flu outbreak in select Luzon duck and quail farms is under control, and that tougher containment measures have been imposed.

Secretary William Dar said in the DA’s virtual press briefing that biosafety standards should be strengthened to keep the virus contained.

“Nandito na sa atin, pero maganda po ang ugnayan ng (It’s here), but there’s good coordination with the Bureau of Animal Industry, regional field offices, and the Department of Health, so it’s under control,” he said.

Dar previously stated that immediate action is required to prevent the sickness from spreading to other areas.

“The avian influenza virus found is of the H5N1 subtype, which is also dangerous to humans.” This is why we must intensify our efforts to manage and limit avian flu, which can only be accomplished through cooperation,” he stated.

A H5N1 outbreak of Avian Influenza (AI) has been reported in duck and quail farms in Bulacan, Pampanga, Laguna, and Camarines Sur thus far.

According to the agency, cases were also documented in Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Tarlac, Sultan Kudarat, and Benguet, “probably” due to the presence of migrating birds.

The DA has already published Memorandum Circulars 5 and 6 on the transportation and surveillance of birds and poultry products in the wake of the avian influenza epidemic.

Live bird, pigeon, game fowl, and duck movement from Luzon to Region 4B, Visayas, and Mindanao has been temporarily halted for a month.

Within mainland Luzon, inter-regional transport of live ducks and quail has also been halted for 30 days.

Other requirements for chicken items, notably those arriving from the 1-kilometer quarantine zone, are also covered.
