MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) issued a warning to barangay officials on Thursday about endorsing and campaigning for candidates during election season.

Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Dio stated the ban applies to all village authorities, including chairpersons, kagawads (council members), secretaries, and treasurers, in a radio interview.

Elective officials such as the president, vice president, senators, congressmen, governors, vice-governors, mayors, vice-mayors, councilors, and Cabinet secretaries, he stated, may back political candidates of their choice.

Citizens complained that many village officials continue to openly support candidates and even join their sorties and that just a few of them are sanctioned for electoral violations.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Ao had previously cautioned barangay officials that “any semblance of campaigning,” including the wearing of garments similar to a candidate’s political hue, is unlawful, and that they should be “apolitical.”

He also warned local chief executives against using local government resources for election-related activities.
