MANILA, Philippines — Director Renato Solidum Jr. of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stated three phreatomagmatic eruptions occurred in Taal Volcano on Thursday.

These happened at 10:39 a.m. for two minutes; 10:47 a.m. for one minute; and 10:55 a.m. for one minute each.

According to Solidum, the first eruption produced plumes that reached 900 meters in height, while the other two produced plumes that reached 500 meters in height.

The interaction of magma and water causes phreatomagmatic eruptions. Multiple explosive episodes, spaced at varying intervals, are typical of eruptions.

No volcanic earthquakes generated by movements or eruptions of magma from the volcano have been observed in the last 24 hours, according to Phivolcs. Low-level background tremor, on the other hand, has been present since March 29.

A low-level background tremor, according to Solidum, could indicate increased hydrothermal activity, groundwater boiling, and volcano degassing.

The main crater lake’s upwelling of hot volcanic fluids resulted in 1,500-meter-high plumes. According to Phivolcs, sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions averaged 6,405 tons on Wednesday.

Over the Taal Volcano, Alert Level 3 (magmatic unrest) is maintained, indicating that magmatic intrusion at the main crater may trigger subsequent eruptions.

Magmatic intrusion is the ascent of magma into the volcano’s shallower levels, which can trigger further explosions since the magma can burst due to gases inside it or when the magma reacts with groundwater in the volcano’s shallower levels.

Phivolcs has advised residents of Taal Volcano Island (TVI) and the high-risk barangays of Bilibinwang and Banyaga in Agoncillo, Boso-Boso, Gulod, and eastern Bugaan East in Laurel, Batangas, to evacuate due to the risk of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami if stronger eruptions occur.

It further stated that all activities on Taal Lake should be forbidden, as well as admission into TVI and certain barangays in Agoncillo and Laurel.
