The Department of Education (DepEd) has condemned the song “Dakila Ka, Bayani Ka” for its “political purpose.”

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Department of Education (DepEd) criticized the usage of the song “Dakila Ka, Bayani Ka” in an internet political advertisement video on Thursday.

The song was written as a homage to front-line fighters against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), according to DepEd Undersecretary for Administration Alaine Pascua, but was used “without” authorization in a political film supporting presidential candidate Vice President Leni Robredo.

“While we respect the political choices of the medical personnel shown in the video,” he stated, “we are shocked that the persons behind the production of the abovementioned video did not even secure permission first from the musicians who willingly contributed their time and talent for the song.”

According to the post, the Robredo People’s Council Hope and Beyond Nueva Ecija produced the campaign film, which included members of the Nueva Ecija Doctors for Leni for Free.

Furthermore, Pascua claimed that exploiting front-line heroes for political gain was insulting, emphasizing that their duty is for the general good regardless of political affiliation.

“The song highlights ‘Anuman ang kulay nila, anuman ang paniniwala, nagkakaisa sa pagtulong sa kaligtasan ng iba (Whichever color, principle, there is unity in assuring the safety of others),’ to commemorate the putting aside of political colors and partisanship in their commitment to our people.” This political version regretfully and terribly tainted that message and recognition,” he continued.

Pascua then threatened legal action, urging the public to keep such materials away from party activities.

Meanwhile, the video in question, which was posted on March 24, was removed immediately after Pascua’s statement was released.

Arnie Mendaros penned and Albert Tamayo arranged “Dakila Ka, Bayani Ka.”
