Only Smartmatic’s internal operations were affected by the ‘breach,’ according to Comelec.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Commission on Elections (Comelec) declared on Friday that its service supplier, Smartmatic International, has assured them that the alleged security breach will not affect the technology used in the next elections.

“They made it clear to us that the data leak had nothing to do with the 2022 elections.” The information that was released concerned internal organization and activities. In a press conference, Comelec chairperson Saidamen Pangarungan stated, “They told us that the integrity of the ballots, the programmed SD (safe digital) cards was not affected by the leakage.”

He further stated that Smartmatic advised him that proper disciplinary action had been taken against their employee as a result of the occurrence.

On Thursday, Pangarungan met with representatives from the international corporation at the Comelec headquarters office in Intramuros, Manila, along with Commissioners George Garcia and Rey Bulay.

Meanwhile, he promised that they would make a decision on the topic as quickly as feasible.

“Although Smartmatic is aware that we investigated all conceivable Comelec measures against them, if they are ever taken. We’re just waiting for the NBI report, which will serve as the official foundation for the action we’ll take,” the Comelec chief stated.

Pangarungan went on to say that he has already instructed the poll body’s legal staff to provide a list of all possible steps in response to the breach.

“However, soon everyone will know because I want to assure everyone, you read my lips, that we will not allow anyone to undermine the public’s faith in our democratic system.” That is our commitment. That’s why I demanded complete transparency without jeopardizing the ballots’ and SD cards’ security,” he continued.

Smartmatic has also been cautioned, according to the chairman of the polling board, to guarantee that a similar situation does not occur again.

Senator Imee Marcos previously reported that a Smartmatic employee allegedly authorized a group of hackers to copy election data from a company-issued laptop.

The statement by Marcos prompted calls for a Senate probe into the incident.
