Comelec: Focus on debate participants rather than absentees

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Commission on Elections (Comelec) suggested that instead of focusing on UniTeam’s Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the spotlight should be on those who are participating in the second leg of its “PiliPinas Debates 2022” for presidential aspirants.

On March 19, Marcos skipped the first of three presidential debates held at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza’s Harbor Garden Tent in Pasay City.

His camp has yet to publish a word on his participation in Sunday’s game as of this writing.

The third debate, on April 24, will be a town hall format after two single-moderator debates.

Comelec Commissioner George Garcia expressed his enthusiasm for the second part’s format adjustments.

When asked if they are hopeful that Marcos will turn up, he stated in a Viber message on Saturday, “We would prefer to focus on those who confirmed and will be present tomorrow (Sunday).”

Dr. Jose Montemayor Jr., businessman Faisal Mangondato, Senators Panfilo Lacson and Manny Pacquiao, labor leader Leody de Guzman, former national security adviser Norberto Gonzales, former presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, and Vice President Leni Robredo have all confirmed their attendance on Sunday.

They will have 120 seconds or two minutes to respond to one basic question and 30 seconds to rebuttal.

The candidates will be divided into three groups of three for each subsequent session, with each group receiving one question to debate.

Each participant will be given 60 seconds to make their closing remarks.
