Russia has registered the world’s first coronavirus nasal spray vaccine.
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia has registered the world’s first nasal spray coronavirus vaccine, according to a statement released by the Health Ministry on Friday.
According to the release, “the Russian Health Ministry has registered the nasal spray variant of the Gam-COVID-Vac (Sputnik V) coronavirus vaccine developed by the Health Ministry’s Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology.”
The vaccine consists of two components based on type 16 and types 5 adenovirus vectors, according to the ministry. The two dosages will be given three weeks apart.
The coronavirus induces mucosal immunity in the respiratory system after this vaccination.
“The use of a nasal spray generates a humoral immune response (raising IgA antibody titers in the blood and nasal secretions, as well as virus-neutralizing IgG antibody titers in the blood) as well as a cellular immunological response to the infection induced by SARS-CoV-2,” according to the statement.
At present time, the vaccine is only for people above the age of 18 who want to be immunized.
The use of the nasal spray coronavirus vaccine will be included in recommendations for booster doses, according to Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko.
