MANILA, Philippines — On Sunday night, President Rodrigo Duterte welcomed Filipino Muslims in the Philippines and abroad “Ramadan Mubarak,” or a good Ramadan, recognizing the month as a reminder of Allah’s mercy and benefits.

He expressed his intention for the holy month to be “really holy” and “meaningful” in a press statement.

“Not only is this most sacred month a time for Muslims to focus on prayer and making apologies, but it is also a time for them to experience and appreciate Allah’s compassion,” Duterte remarked.

He expressed the hope that the holy month will bring Muslims in the Philippines closer to Allah.

“It is my desire that all of your efforts for discipline and thought will be rewarded with revelations as well as a closer connection with Allah, similar to how the period of fasting finishes with feasting,” he added.

He also hopes that the occasion will enable the Qur’anic teachings to take precedence over all of their judgments, “even the tiniest ones.”

“Let the knowledge that comes with contemplation lead you to live with integrity for yourself and for the country, especially now when it is most required,” he urged.

Ramadan is the Muslim calendar’s ninth month and the month of fasting.

During Ramadan, devout Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset every day, viewing the month as a time for meditation, community prayer in mosques, and Qur’an reading.

They also abstain from vices and donate alms to the destitute.

On the first three days of Shawwal, or the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, the conclusion of Ramadan, also known as Eid al-Fitr, will be celebrated.
