In the first quarter of this year, the Ilocos Region received P44 million in TUPAD pay.

MANILA, Philippines β€” Under its flagship employment initiative, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) distributed a total of PHP44 million in pay in the Ilocos Region.

In the months January to March, the department’s Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/ Displaced Employees (TUPAD) program benefited a total of 12,386 displaced and disadvantaged workers in the informal sector.

“For many of our informal workers, TUPAD has become a critical financial safety net. In a statement released on Sunday, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III stated, “We are glad to have been a part of a program that has produced jobs and provided a reprieve for those most afflicted by the pandemic.”

Cleaning and disinfecting, as well as greening and tree-planting efforts, were among the services provided by the personnel. For a period of 10 to 15 days, these initiatives were carried out in the beneficiaries’ respective barangays. They were paid a salary ranging from PHP3,400 to PHP5,100 per individual.

1,198 people from Ilocos Norte, 1,276 from Ilocos Sur, 944 from La Union, 951 from Pangasinan’s Districts 1-2, 4,925 from Pangasinan’s Districts 3-4, and 3,092 from Pangasinan’s Districts 5-6 were among the total beneficiaries.

DOLE RO1 regional director Evelyn Ramos said the TUPAD is still being implemented because it was spared from the election prohibition by the Commission on Elections.

“Secretary Bello emphasized that these DOLE programs are demand-driven and have long serviced marginalized, vulnerable, and under-privileged beneficiaries/workers,” Ramos stated.

She went on to say that the regional office will continue to administer TUPAD in the coming months, but that safety measures have been put in place to ensure that the program remains apolitical.
