BAGUIO CITY, PHILIPPINES — The municipal administration has finished a PHP18.7 million project to replace traditional high-pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs in its streetlights with light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures in order to cut electricity usage and improve illumination.

Baguio’s chief information officer, Aileen Refuerzo, said the project was finished on March 25 and was funded through the city’s supplementary budget.

Along important roadways in the central business area, 7,485 streetlights were replaced with LED lamps as part of the project.

The project was completed ahead of schedule, on April 18th.

She stated that after a month of use, her office will have a detailed report on the actual savings realized by the local administration.

According to Refuerzo, the energy efficiency of LED technology was demonstrated in a presentation at the city’s management committee meeting by comparing the city’s lighting conditions before and after the project’s completion.

The long-awaited project will upgrade the city’s street lighting system with cost-effective and energy-efficient LED bulbs.

To address village officials’ complaints over blown lights, she said streetlights along alleys in several villages will be replaced with LED fixtures next.

A total of 1,846 posts have been sought by the various barangays, with the number projected to rise when the department completes its inventory in the remaining barangays.
