The Bureau of Internal Revenue advises election candidates to collect taxes from vendors.

CABANATUAN, Nueva Ecija – During the election season, candidates for various government positions were encouraged to “exercise patriotism” by collecting withholding taxes from their campaign material suppliers.

According to Carlito Bohol, assistant revenue district officer of the Bureau of Internal Revenue District Office (BIR-DO) 23-B, candidates and political parties are required by law to collect a 5% withholding tax from their entire contract amount with suppliers.

The law, according to Bohol, includes campaign materials, rally services, venue rental expenses, and equipment.

“Ito pong withholding tax ay hindi po ito buwis ng kandidato bagkus ito po ay buwis ng kanilang suppliers,” he remarked in an interview.

He stated that any funds raised by candidates or parties must be remitted to the BIR by the 15th of the next month.

“Bilang tumatakbong lingkod bayan, ngayon nila ipakita sa pamamagitan ng pagiging makabayan sa pangungulekta ng buwis (As a candidate for public office, it is time to demonstrate our patriotism by collecting taxes),” stated Bohol.

The BIR can use a candidate’s or a party’s statement of contributions and expenses, or Statement of Election Contribution and Expenditure, as the foundation for possible legal action if they failed to withhold or return taxes, he said.

Meanwhile, Lope Tubera, the director of RDO 23B, has urged the public to file their income tax returns by April 18 at the latest. The deadline used to be April 15, but it was moved to April 15 in 2022 due to the date falling on Holy Friday.

He stated the district set up “Tax Tulungan Centers” in a number of malls, including SM City, Robinsons, and Waltermart (both here and in Gapan City), that are open Monday through Saturday to service taxpayers.
