30 percent of PH schools are now ready for in-person classes, according to the Department of Education.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The number of schools being considered for progressive in-person classes has now reached 21,352, or around 30% of all schools in the country, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

There were 20,811 public schools and 541 private schools in the country, with a total of 4,271,743 students.

The Department of Education (DepEd) announced in a press conference that the government is working to prepare all schools across the country with the cooperation of the Department of Health (DOH) and local government entities.

“Since we already instructed all schools to undergo assessment, the aim actually is 100 percent as long as kahit na sila ay wala pa sa (even if they are not yet under) Alert level 1 and 2, as long as qualified na sila.” So once their locations have been declared under Alert Levels 1 and 2, they can begin,” said Assistant Secretary Malcolm Garma of the Department of Education.

If the alert level status in areas with eligible schools rises again, Garma added, lessons will be temporarily halted rather than closed.

According to the Department of Health, approximately 200 regions across the country are currently on Alert level 1.

The Department of Education previously stated that before schools are authorized to hold in-person lessons, they must first pass a risk assessment based on the alert level status of the area, the school’s ability to apply health measures, coordination with LGUs, and parental or guardian approval.

Setup via the internet

In-person classes, according to DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, will not result in the progressive abandonment of the online learning setting, and that a hybrid approach will “prepare” learners for the rising needs of the real world.

“Hindi namin binibitiwan ‘yung online, hindi namin binibitiwan ‘yung technology, kasi parehang development ‘yan” Much of the world now conducts its business, operations, and contacts with one another amongst and among humans, even online, so our children must be prepared for both. This is why we refer to our approach as blended learning. “We’re not going to abandon one for the other,” she stated.

In addition to pursuing a mixed learning model, the Department of Education stated it is considering hiring learning support assistants or establishing support centers to increase students’ ability to comprehend rather than merely read and memorize.

Given the gaps created by the school setup during a pandemic, DepEd Undersecretary Annalyn Sevilla emphasized the importance of profiling students and clustering those who require attention.

“Nung nawala’yung face-to-face at alam naman po natin na hindi naman po natin na hindi naman po natin na hindi naman po natin na hindi naman po natin na hindi naman po natin na hindi naman po natin n
