The DA expects that the new administration would put food security first.

MANILA, Philippines β€” According to a Department of Agricultural (DA) official, the future administration should prioritize agriculture and food security, given the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic and the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Agriculture Undersecretary Fermin Dantes Adriano said in the DA’s 183rd virtual press conference on Tuesday that candidates who win the upcoming May elections should ensure food sustainability in the country by having a stable supply of basic food items like rice, livestock, poultry, corn, and net fisheries.

“Lahat sa mundo ngayon (Everyone in the world), international organizations, talagang worried na worried sila sa (are very concerned about) food security, at pino-project nila na (they are projecting) magde-decline ang global productivity ng (by) more than 1% kasi napakamahal ng fertilizer,” she said (because fertilizers are very expensive). So kailangan talagang bigyang prayoridad ng susunod na administrasyon ang agriculture (agricultural must be prioritized by the future administration),” he remarked.

According to Adriano, the effects of the Ukraine-Russia conflict on food security will be noticed from May to August this year, with a major decrease in wheat supply, and a ripple effect on fertilizer, oil, and other productions.

“‘Yun ang harvest season, na wala na tayong mabibiling trigo, mahihirapan tayo at ‘yung mais, kasi sila ‘yung mga major producers, and ‘yung countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia, who are dependent on the trigo nila sa pagkain, ay mahihirapan at baka yung ib

He stated that they will make proposals for the next administration to consider carefully.

Furthermore, Adriano stated that food security demanded a significant investment from the government in order to secure long-term growth, citing various other countries such as South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam as examples of countries that have maintained stability despite global concerns.

“Bakit nila kayang gawin ‘yun, kasi binigyan ng prayoridad ng gobyerno nila ‘yung agriculture (How did they manage it? Because agriculture was a top priority for their government). It is the cornerstone of a successful development process. Prioritizing agricultural growth is the “anchor” for long-term development, he explained.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) stated that the country has now achieved unprecedented 92 percent rice self-sufficiency, highlighting the benefits of the Rice Tariffication Law (RTL) and the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF).
