A partnership between CHED and York University strengthens PH and Canada interaction.

MANILA – The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and York University in Canada inked an academic collaboration memorandum of understanding (MOU) to kick off the Globally Network Learning Partnership between Philippine universities and York University (GNL).

The MOU was signed by CHED Chairman Popoy de Vera and Dr. Rhonda Lenton, President and Vice-Chancellor of York University in Canada, during de Vera’s recent official visit to Canada with officials from Philippine universities to develop deeper university-to-university collaboration.

The Philippine Higher Education High-Level Mission to Canada, led by de Vera and HEI officials from Mariano Marcos State University, West Visayas State University, Southern Leyte State University, Tarlac State University, Tarlac Agricultural University, Iloilo Science and Technology University, World City College, and Universidad de Dagupan, met with the University of Toronto, Canadian Bureau for International Education, and Universidad de Dagupan in Ottawa and Toronto.

“For the past two years, CHED, Philippine HEIs, and York University have collaborated on the Philippine Folklore Dance program, inclusive internationalization conference, international indigenous students exchange program, and Globally Networked Learning (GNL),” De Vera said in a news release on Thursday.

This recent meeting at York University builds on current collaborations and identifies new research fields, faculty, and student mobility initiatives that can be launched with the HEIs involved in this formal mission.

With over 55,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs, York University is a premier higher education institution in Ontario, Canada.

Times Higher Education (THE) placed York University 11th in Canada and 67th worldwide this year, out of 1,115 post-secondary institutions from 94 countries.

The efforts, dedication, and commitment of two Filipino faculty members at York University, Dr. Patrick Alcedo, Chair, Department of Dance, and faculty lead for the Philippine Summer Abroad Course on Dance and Culture, and Ms. Helen Balderama, Director, Global Engagement and Partnerships, made these series of partnership meetings possible.

During the discussion, several Filipino graduate students at York University shared their experiences and helped the group comprehend the university’s varied program offers.

Because of their expertise with the educational systems in both nations, Alcedo and Valderrama, who studied and taught in Philippine institutions before going to Canada, were significant contributors to the debates.

Alcedo is a well-known filmmaker and expert on the folklorization of religion, having taught at the University of the Philippines before relocating to Canada.

“With CHED and York University’s strong commitment to joint aims and visions for higher education, I am confident that this relationship will be fruitful.” “This MoU is the most recent in a series of agreements inked by CHED to expand prospects for higher education institutions from both nations,” De Vera explained.

MMSU President Shirley Agrupis, WVSU President Joselito Villaruz, ISATU President Raul Muyong, SLSU President Prose Ivy Yepes, WCC President Patrick Guico, Universidad de Dagupan Vice Presidents Feliza Arzadon and Anthony Sua, and officials from TSU and TAU were among those who took part in the discussions.
