DUMAGUETE CITY — In the May 9 national and local elections, Bishop Julito Cortes of the Diocese of Dumaguete urged voters must choose politicians who will stand for truth, justice, and love of the country.

During a Mass at the St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral here, Cortes began the Holy Week observance with the traditional blessing of “palaspas,” which are made of palm or coconut leaves.

“May we not cease shouting about God’s truth,” Cortes said in a combination of English and Cebuano, emphasizing that, like the fake news and lies that led to Jesus’ murder, there are some “hungry for power” who wish to suppress the truth and its opponents.

The prelate pointed out that individuals who initially believed and supported Jesus were the same people who later begged for His crucifixion after being deceived by the Pharisees and spreading false information about Him.

“Do we listen to the voice of God or the voice of the world?” He inquired.

The 65-year-old priest stated that in this day of contemporary technology, individuals must conduct fact-checking before judging, condemning, penalizing, or even killing innocent people.

He exhorted believers to vote for candidates who will truly “serve the people, stand by the truth, give voice to their constituency, safeguard the environment, and defend human rights.”

“And may they rule fearfully, battling for truth and justice while encouraging progress and harmony in our community,” he stated.

Cortes also requested prayers for an end to the conflict in Ukraine and other countries, as well as for the impoverished and homeless, as well as those afflicted by the coronavirus disease pandemic of 2019.

“As we prepare for the upcoming elections on May 9, 2022, let us also pray for our own country.” “May we offer our sacred votes to do what is right and good, following the example of the Lord Jesus who gave His life for us,” he stated.
