MANILA, Philippines — On Saturday, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) commemorated the 80th anniversary of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) by issuing stamps and official first-day covers.

The stamps were designed by the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office to promote, preserve, and memorialize the values, thoughts, and deeds of war veterans.

According to a press release, the stamps are also intended to promote patriotism and love of nation, particularly among young people.

Ryman Dominic Albuladora, a PHLPost in-house graphic artist, updated the stamp layout even more.

A total of 40,000 copies were made, with 5,400 official first-day covers being sold to stamp collectors for PHP12.

“As we face the challenges of the future, it is our goal that we continue to fire our sense of nationalism and promote solidarity in the country,” Postmaster General Norman Fulgencio remarked.

Starting on Jan. 7, 1942, Filipino and American forces resisted Bataan from the Imperial Japanese Army’s invasion until April 9, 1942 (Fall of Bataan), which led to the Bataan Death March.

National shrines, such as the Dambana ng Kagitingan or Shrine of Valor at Mt. Samat in Pilar, Bataan, which was represented on commemorative stamps, have been built to commemorate the bravery of the Filipino and American forces.

The Philatelic Counter of the Manila Central Post Office in Liwasang Bonifacio sells stamps and official first-day covers.
