A Senate hearing could uncover the identities of those involved in food smuggling: Sotto

MANILA, Philippines β€” On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate will aim to finish up its hearings on alleged agricultural commodity smuggling.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III said Monday that an intelligence report with the identities of those involved in the alleged smuggling will be verified by the resource persons.

“We’re on our third hearing, and we’d like to get a committee report out as soon as possible. Even as we campaign, we’re trying to find time to do this because it’s part of our job and so the Ombudsman can look into the situation “During the Kapihan ng Samahang Plaridel at The Manila Hotel, where his running mate, Senator Panfilo Lacson, was also present, the vice-presidential candidate said.

Sotto stated that if they are given the wrong names, they will assert parliamentary immunity.

When they tour different provinces throughout their campaign, Lacson says they run into challenges with the agriculture sector.

“If you go out and talk to other sectors, notably farmers and fisherfolk, you will find that it is a very prevalent and annoying issue. Agricultural smuggling is wreaking havoc on the local agricultural sector, so mabuti na rin na nailabas ito para magising din ang mga (it’s good that this is being discussed so we can bring it up to those) concerned, especially those from the Bureau of Customs and the Department of Agriculture “he stated

During the second hearing of the Committee of the Whole on March 28, Agot Balonoy, the public relations officer for the League of Associations at the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post, stated that they are losing a lot of money owing to rampant smuggling.

“Since last year, our typical daily order of carrots has decreased by up to 40%, or PHP2.5 million per day. Smuggled carrots from China are now preferred by retailers and consumers “she stated

Lawyer Elias Jose Inciong, president of the United Broiler Raisers Association, also accused the DA of being pro-importation.

The Senate committee announced at 12:53 p.m. on Monday that DA Secretary William Dar would be unable to attend the hearing but would send representatives in his place.

The DA previously stated that if high-ranking government officials are found to be complicit in the proliferation of illicit agricultural products, it will seek charges against them.
