Officials from the Comelec seek an investigation into the ballot problem in Singapore.

MANILA, Philippines β€” On Tuesday, a Commission on Elections (Comelec) official expressed his desire for an investigation into the occurrence in Singapore in which an overseas voter received a spoilt ballot.

Commissioner George Garcia stated that the incident should not have occurred since it would cast doubt on the election’s integrity on May 9.

“I’m worried because this shouldn’t have happened in the first place.” In a television appearance, he remarked that a single instance like this may cast doubt on the entire process’s legitimacy.

“Of course, this is human error; we recognize that,” Garcia added. “However, we are requesting and appealing with our electoral board that the same occurrence not occur again in the future.”

Late Monday afternoon, he said, they received confirmation of the occurrence.

“I was even wondering yesterday if there was only one ballot or if there were multiple ballots.” But, at the very least, the Embassy acknowledged that only one ballot was involved, but we need seriously look into this,” Garcia said.

“This must never happen again.” “We should seriously look into why the voter was given the spoiled ballot in the first place,” he continued.

The Comelec commissioner stated that spoiled ballots must be separated and placed in a separate envelope, and should not be mixed together with the good or legitimate ballots.

“So we’re asking why,” he said, adding that “surely we’ll be able to obtain that answer in the next few days.”

The one-month international voting period began on April 10 and will conclude on May 9.

The Philippine embassy in Singapore published a statement on Monday acknowledging that one spoilt ballot was provided to a voter inadvertently and unintentionally.

It was also said that this was a one-time occurrence.
