Dengue fever cases are on the rise in four regions, according to the Department of Health.
MANILA, Philippines — Dengue fever cases have increased in the Zamboanga Peninsula, Cagayan Valley, Western Visayas, and Davao areas, according to a health official.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated in an online media forum that the surge in dengue cases has only affected specific localities and provinces, not the entire four regions.
“Dun natin nakita lumagpas sa pandemic threshold ‘yung bilang ng mga kaso ‘ (In Zamboanga City, the number of cases exceeded the epidemic threshold). “That’s why the local government declared a public health emergency,” she explained.
Nonetheless, in 2022, the weekly reported instances were much lower than “the cases we had nationally in 2021.”
“Nag-uulan na po, kailangan na masusing linisin ang mga backyard natin, ang ating mga tahanan, public spaces para mawala itong aedes aegypti o’yung lamok na nakaka-cause ng dengue,” she said.
To help dengue patients, the Department of Health has activated Fast Lanes in hospitals, prepositioned supplies for regional and local government needs, such as the pesticides used to combat the spread of these mosquitos, and informed local government units about the 4S approach.
The 4S strategy refers to the search and destruction of mosquito breeding areas, as well as self-protection measures, early diagnosis of symptoms, and support spraying or fogging to avoid further outbreaks.
