Senatorial candidate requests a Comelec investigation into pre-shaded ballots.

MANILA, Philippines β€” Guillermo Eleazar, a senatorial candidate and former police chief, called on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to undertake a comprehensive inquiry into the reported pre-shaded ballot in Singapore during abroad absentee voting on Wednesday.

This comes after Filipino netizen Cheryl Ab claimed to have gotten a pre-shaded ballot from the Philippine Embassy in Singapore.

The embassy denied it, but admitted that on April 10, an unintentional occurrence occurred in which a spoiled ballot was given to a voter.

The episode has since gone viral on social media, prompting accusations of electoral fraud. Eleazar believes it is unjust to bring some candidates into an issue about which they are unaware.

“I am encouraging the Commission on Elections to investigate this situation and guarantee that all procedures are in place to prevent a repeat of this,” he said.

He also asked other overseas Filipino workers to report any such events to authorities as soon as possible.

“I’m also pleading with the public, particularly our online community, to give the Comelec an opportunity to explain what happened.” Let us put speculation to rest and await the outcome of the investigation,” he remarked.

The Comelec says it hasn’t received any information about pre-shaded ballots, but the Task Force Against Fake News will meet to discuss the problem.

Eleazar promised to empower the people of Marawi City in the rehabilitation efforts by ensuring that their views are heard in the reconstruction and development of the conflict-torn territory as events unfolded.

On April 11, Eleazar had a motorcade in Marawi City.

He also went to Cagayan De Oro City and Balo-i, Lanao Del Norte, to campaign. During the months-long fight in Marawi in 2017 between state forces and the ISIS-inspired Maute Group, the city was severely damaged.

Since then, it has been undergoing rehabilitation and reconstruction in order to restore normalcy to the life of the locals.

The engagement of Marawi locals in the rebuilding process, according to Eleazar, is based on the bottom-to-top paradigm of development, which requires individuals affected in the communities to be included in the planning, execution, and monitoring of program and project progress.

Various Marawi City groups have claimed that they have been shut out of the entire reconstruction process. Eleazar stated that he will ensure that the entire rehabilitation process is transparent.

This, he stressed, must be accompanied with a prioritizing of families’ livelihoods and children’s education for the impacted populations.

Given Marawi City’s remote location from developed areas, he believes that complete assistance has yet to reach the city.
