MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced on Wednesday that Tropical Depression (TD) Agaton, which has already diminished into a low-pressure area (LPA), has caused production losses worth PHP423.8 million for 6,557 farmers in the Visayas and neighboring areas.

According to a report issued by the DA-Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center, damages were recorded mostly in the Western and Eastern Visayas, as well as the Caraga Region, as a result of heavy rains.

Rice losses totaled PHP403.5 million, high-value crop losses totaled PHP17.1 million, and corn losses totaled PHP3.2 million.

However, the government stated that the figure could potentially rise when more output losses are reported.

“Through its Regional Field Offices (RFOs), the Department of Agriculture (DA) is assessing the damage and losses caused by TD ‘AGATON’ in the agri-fisheries industry. The DA “continuously coordinates with pertinent NGAs (national government agencies), local governments, and other DRRM-related offices to assess the impact of ‘AGATON,’ as well as available resources for interventions and assistance,” according to the DA.

In a virtual press conference on Tuesday, Agriculture Undersecretary Ariel Cayanan noted that subsidies from the rapid reaction fund (QRF) are available to help affected farmers and fishermen.

These include recovery seeds for rice, corn, and vegetables, an agricultural loan scheme, and rehabilitation assistance from a variety of sources, including the QRF.
