The ABS-CBN has a ‘good program’ but its running at people’s expense

MANILA, Philippines — While local media ABS-CBN Corp. provided a list of “excellent” shows to its viewers, President Rodrigo Duterte remarked on Tuesday that the company used its channels “at the expense of the people.”

“But they are really good, no doubt about it, nga murag na-miss pud ninyo ang ABS-CBN kay gwapo pud ilang programming (But they are very good, no doubt about it.)” ABS-CBN is something you miss because they have a fantastic program). But they were running at the expense of the people,” Duterte stated during a campaign stop in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte, for his ruling party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipinas-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

Duterte claimed he objected to the renewal of ABS-franchise CBN’s because the network reportedly “swindles and cheats for money.”

He underlined that ABS-CBN still owes the government money in taxes.

“Kita mo sa ABS-CBN nidto kadtong?” Ang nahitabo sa ABS-CBN, gigukod nako kasi ang ilang taxes, which are in the billions of pesos, wala nila bayri. (Did you see that on TV, the ABS-CBN case?) Mao tong gigukod nako sila, gihatod gyud nako sila sa [unclear] kay mga hambugero na unya magsige’g pangwarta What occurred with ABS-CBN was that I pursued them because they failed to pay billions in taxes. That is why I pursued them and drove them into… Because they are so arrogant and continue to try to make money in an unethical manner),” he remarked.

Duterte also brought up the fact that his campaign advertising was not shown on ABS-CBN during the 2016 presidential elections.

“Mao to nga wa may makagukod kay og dili i-Magandang Gabi Bayan, atakehon na,” says the narrator. ‘Wala koy pakialam ninyo, amigo man ta,’ ako, giingnan nako sila. ‘Wa pud ko mangayo ninyo basig piso kay gibayran man nako, wa pa gani ninyo gisalida tong akong kuan,’ ‘I don’t care about you,’ I told them. We’ve become buddies. And I never requested for a single peso from you because I paid for an ad that you never even showed’),” he explained.

Following the National Telecommunications Commission’s (NTC) issue of a cease-and-desist order on May 5, 2020, ABS-CBN ceased broadcast operations.

PDP-Laban senatorial candidate and House Deputy Speaker Rolando Marcoleta received praise from Duterte for exposing ABS-alleged CBN’s wrongdoings.

Marcoleta is the one that was actually working hard, as you’ve seen on TV, and speaks so eloquently, speaks Tagalog well, and is a nice and moral man. Because I forget his first name, I’ll just state his last name. Have you seen it on television? Is the lower house looking into the ABS-CBN case? He’s the one),” he explained.

The NTC granted Villar-led Advanced Media Broadcasting System, Inc. provisional authorization (PA) in January to “build, operate, and maintain” digital TV channel 16 and a temporary simulcast on analog TV channel 2.

The Aliw Broadcasting Corp. was also granted permission by the NTC to develop, operate, and maintain a digital broadcasting system on channel 23.

Pastor Apollo Quiboloy’s Swara Sug Media Corporation (SSMC), the legal operational name of Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI), was also given permission to install, operate, and maintain digital TV channel 43.

ABS-CBN had previously used the channels.
