MANILA, Philippines — On Wednesday, the Philippines received 75,000 doses of Sinovac’s CoronaVac vaccinations, which will be used to boost the vaccination campaign against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

50,000 pills were supplied by the Qatari government, while 25,000 doses were donated by Sinovac Biotech.

Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., the chief implementer of the National Task Force Against Covid-19, remarked upon receiving the shipment, “This is really essential for us because the President has directed BARMM to push up the coverage of their immunization.”

The donation, according to Qatar Ambassador to the Philippines Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Malki, is worth USD45,000 and will boost the Philippines’ recovery from the global pandemic.

Al-Malki stated, “The Philippines is an important country for us, a buddy country.”

President Rodrigo Duterte voiced alarm on Monday, noting that BARMM had the lowest vaccination rate of the country’s 17 regions, with only 27% of the three million-strong target population fully immunized against Covid-19.

In a pre-recorded Talk to the People, Duterte said, “I’d want to urge chairman Murad (Ebrahim) to kindly give a little push for the people there to get vaccinated.”

Galvez would fly to BARMM to lead the region’s vaccination push, according to Duterte.

Due to the poor vaccination coverage in BARMM, Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje indicated on Wednesday that an increase in Covid-19 infections is likely.

As of March 30, the Philippines had administered 142,236,006 doses of Covid-19 vaccines, according to the Department of Health’s Covid-19 dashboard.

65,885,048 of these were utilized for the second dose, and 12,018,418 for booster doses.
