As ‘Agaton’ evaporates, all shipping and fishing operations restart.

MANILA, Philippines β€” Former tropical storm Agaton dissipated 65 kilometers southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, on Wednesday, allowing all shipping and fishing operations at all ports countrywide to restart.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) issued an alert saying that operations resumed at 9 a.m., allowing all passengers, truck drivers and freight assistance, vessels, motor bancas, and rolling cargoes to move by sea after being stranded due to bad weather.

According to data from the PCG command center, there were roughly 3,000 stranded passengers at ports nationwide as of Wednesday morning, according to a Laging Handa briefing by PCG spokesperson Commodore Armando Balilo.

“But because we were able to resume sea travel at Matnog and recently in Central Visayas, inaasahan natin na unti-unti na po itong mababawasan and mawawala (But because we were able to resume sea travel at Matnog and recently in Central Visayas, we expect this to lessen and eventually disappear),” Balilo said.

The PCG, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), and respective local government units (LGU) provided food and drink to the stranded passengers, he said, while they awaited the continuation of their journey.

Sea transport has resumed in ports in the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Northeastern Mindanao, and Central Visayas, according to him.

During Holy Week, he said, ports across the country are expecting a surge of passengers.

“Binabantayan po natin diyan iyong eastern and western seaboards ng nautical highway.” Ito pong Batangas papunta ng Mindoro, Mindoro papunta ng Roxas, Mindoro to Caticlan, at hanggang sa makarating po sa Iloilo. From Batangas to Mindoro, Mindoro to Roxas, Mindoro to Caticlan, and up to Iloilo),” Balilo explained.

He also reminded the public to check for required documents before embarking on their journey, particularly their vaccination card and any other requirements imposed by their destination LGU, as well as to adhere to other protocols such as declaring dangerous cargo such as sharp objects, flammable liquids, and other hazardous materials.

Search and rescue operations

Meanwhile, Balilo said the PCG has stepped up rescue and search operations in regions hit by “Agaton,” particularly in Baybay, Leyte, where landslides and floods have killed people and forced the local government to declare a state of emergency.

PCG forces are currently deployed throughout Eastern Visayas to assist with the devastation left in the aftermath of “Agaton,” he stated.

“As we speak, PCG Guard personnel in Iloilo and Capiz are humigit-kumulang sa sampung deployable response group ay kasama pa rin po ng mga LGU ng Iloilo at ng Capiz para po sa mga evacuation at sa mga rescue operations in flooded areas,” Balilo said.

The PCG is also working on the submerged M/V Mika Mari off the coast of Cebu’s Camotes Island, which sank during the attack of “Agaton,” according to Balilo.

He added that the ship had no passengers on board and that all 13 of the crew members had been rescued and were in good health.

“Ang huling report sa atin ay lalagyan po ng oil spill boom para naman po masawata kung anumang oil ang tatagas dito sa barko,” Balilo remarked.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) in Baybay reported 48 deaths on Tuesday as a result of various landslides and flooding triggered by the storm’s heavy rain.

The low-pressure area vanished at 10 a.m., according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

However, rain showers will be dispersed in Quezon, Bicol Region, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and the Visayas, according to the forecast.
