US Space Command admits interplanetary meteor impacted Earth

The United States Space Command reported on Wednesday that scientists have detected the first known interplanetary meteor to strike the Earth.

According to CNN, the meteor, identified as CNEOS 2014-01-08, crashed against the northeast coast of Papua New Guinea on Jan. 8, 2014, according to a US Space Command document.

Amir Siraj, who recognized the item as an interstellar meteor in a 2019 research he co-authored as an undergraduate at Harvard University, was taken aback by the discovery, according to the media site.

Siraj was investigating “Oumuamua,” the solar system’s first known interstellar object discovered in 2017, with Harvard University’s Abraham Loeb, a professor of science.

Because their data came from NASA’s CNEOS database, which does not include details like measurement accuracy, Loeb and Siraj were unable to publish their findings in a publication.

They finally got official confirmation from John Shaw, the deputy commander of the US Space Command, that it was an interstellar meteor after years of trying to get the information they needed.

“Dr. Joel Mozer, the Chief Scientist of Space Operations Command, a service component of US Space Command, analyzed additional data available to the Department of Defense in relation to this result. Dr. Mozer confirmed that the NASA velocity calculation is precise enough to indicate an interstellar trajectory “Shaw expressed himself in his letter.

The command, which is part of the United States Department of Defense, is in charge of military operations in space.

A uncommon occurrence, an interstellar meteor is a space rock that originates from beyond our solar system.
