NAIA should be renamed Manila International Airport, according to Solon.

MANILA, Philippines β€” A bill has been introduced by a party-list congressman to rename Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Manila International Airport.

Duterte Youth Rep. Ducielle Cardema filed House Bill 10833, claiming that the name of the country’s international gateway should not have been “politicized in the first place.”

The law was introduced on April 11 and made public on Monday.

According to Cardema, the airport was renamed NAIA in 1987 by Republic Act 6639, which was signed by then-President Corazon Aquino.

In relation to Aquino’s husband, Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., who was slain on Aug. 21, 1983, at the Manila airport, Cardema condemned the move as a “self-serving and highly politicized conduct.”

“Because our country is called the Philippines, and our capital is called Manila,” Cardema explained, “the Philippines’ international gateway to the world must be called the Manila International Airport.”

She claimed that rebranding NAIA would make it more easily recognizable to foreigners and would instill pride in Filipinos.

“Common sense dictates that it is easier for foreigners and tourists traveling around the world to locate our country and our international gateway if it is named after our country’s capital, and it gives millions of Filipinos a sense of national pride to refer to it as the Manila International Airport,” she explained.
