FVR: The next president should have a plan and a long-term vision for PH

MANILA, Philippines – Former President Fidel V. Ramos stated the next president should have a solid roadmap and a long-term vision for the country to fully recover and regain its status as “Asia’s Rising Tiger” when the country elects a new leader in three weeks.

Ramos, who led the country to substantial socioeconomic accomplishments during his six years in Malacaang, also said the next president should aim for inclusive, long-term economic progress that is felt at the grassroots.

“You know, we can still do that,” Ramos remarked in an interview for “Behind the Red Pen,” a new book about his administration written by experienced communications consultant Jojo Terencio.

“All we need is a road map and a long-term strategy for the Philippines.” And the President must offer that, and everyone must work together to make that vision a reality,” Ramos said.

“The government cannot do it alone,” he said, reminding citizens of their shared responsibility in maintaining the country’s progress and development. We must all do our part.”

Due to numerous leaks caused by internal struggle and dissension, Ramos compared the Philippines to a “sinking ship.”

“As our captain, the President must be aware of where these leaks are coming from and take immediate action,” he said. “We also need to pull an oar or plug a leak because we’re all together onboard.” We must do everything we can for the sake of the country.”

Because of its fast-growing economy, the Philippines was once dubbed “Asia’s Rising Tiger,” with an average annual growth rate of 6 to 7%. It was a distinction the country held for several years until the world economy was struck by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

“Behind the Red Pen” brings readers back to some of the important events and figures from the FVR administration, which lasted six years from 1992 to 1998. The book, which includes never-before-seen images, allows readers to get to know Ramos as a leader and gets an insight into his personal life.

In the Foreword to the book, Ramos writes that reading it made him nostalgic for his time at the Palace since it brought back so many memories of incidents that occurred nearly three decades ago.

“There were ups and downs in my administration. But it was a good six years in general. “It was a period in which we demonstrated the value of togetherness, solidarity, and teamwork in the service of our country,” he remarked.

FVR’s ubiquitous red pens, which he used to issue handwritten memoranda, marginal notes, and commands since his military days, inspired the title.

Solidaridad (Manila) and Popular Bookstore (Manila) both have copies of the book (Quezon City). Serendipithings can be reached at 09202717323 for online orders and delivery.
