UNICEF provides cash assistance to families in Bohol, according to DSWD-7.

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) provided cash assistance to 2,000 families in two towns in Bohol devastated by Typhoon Odette, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD-7) announcement on Tuesday.

The DSWD said in a statement that the aid under the Humanitarian Cash Transfer (HCT) Plus program was recently distributed through RD Pawnshop, a financial service provider chosen by UNICEF to distribute PHP5,000 to the recipients.

537 participants of UNICEF’s HCT Plus program were from Tubigon’s coastal town, while 1,453 were from San Isidro, according to the DSWD’s Region 7 field office.

According to the 2020 census, San Isidro is a 5th class municipality with a population of 9,909 people, while Tubigon is a 1st class municipality with a population of 47,886.

Aside from the PHP5,000 each recipient family got via a unique transaction reference code, they also received UNICEF information and communication materials, as well as UNICEF’s advocacy efforts.

Beneficiaries from San Isidro were also awarded an additional PHP100 as a transportation subsidy to cover their excursions to and from the nearest RD Pawnshop, where they may withdraw the cash awards, according to Leah Quintana, DSWD-7 information officer.

“UNICEF also conducted learning sessions on child health and nutrition, protection, Covid-19 infection management, and water, sanitation, and hygiene through a restricted face-to-face conversation,” she said.

Those households that did not receive cash assistance from government agencies or development partners, as well as those with children aged 18 and under, lactating and/or pregnant women, children with disabilities, and those suffering from or at risk of malnutrition, are all identified as beneficiaries under the UNICEF-DSWD HCR Plus program.

The initiative also fulfills the government’s financial promise to individuals affected by Typhoon Odette, which wreaked havoc on regions of the Visayas and Mindanao, including Bohol.

According to the DSWD-7, those who got assistance under this program will no longer receive the same amount of assistance under the DSWD’s assistance to individuals in crisis situations.

In March 2022, the agency and UNICEF signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) outlining the HCT Plus implementation procedures.

More homes have been recognized as candidates for the program. The agency and UNICEF, on the other hand, are currently reviewing data and identifying beneficiaries.
