DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) and its partner agencies have completed their preparations for the May 2022 elections, which will be secure, accurate, free, and fair.

Eastmincom commander Lt. Gen. Greg Almerol said security preparations are underway, with a focus on force deployment and contingency plans in regions identified as “election areas of concern” in the region.

Almerol said the preparations were the outcome of a series of Regional Joint Security Control Center command conferences with the Commission on Elections (Comelec), Philippine National Police (PNP), and other government security agencies, according to a statement released on Monday.

In addition, Almerol stated that they are considering enlisting the help of reserve and forward service units to help with the force deployment on May 9.

Among the preparations, he said, are increased random checkpoints and ensuring that available resources are ready to deploy, particularly during the delivery of election materials to polling sites.

Apart from that, he informed the public that the communist New People’s Army (NPA) has been sufficiently destabilized by the sequence of surrenders and unit collapses among its members to prevent it from carrying out atrocities.

“Now that they are in such a weak position, we are convinced that the NPA will not be able to prevent our people from expressing their constitutional rights,” Almerol added.

Despite this, he said the military is on high alert to avoid any unfortunate incidents, particularly in places where security is an issue.

During the election season, the Comelec designated the Eastmincom as one of the law enforcement agencies and government instrumentalities to conduct security operations.
