CEBU CITY, Philippines – A leading police officer stated Tuesday that around 500 uniformed and non-uniformed personnel from the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) will participate in the two-day absentee voting here.

In a news conference, CCPO deputy director for operations Lt. Col. Wilbert Parilla announced that 458 of the city’s 1,200 police officers who are residents of different parts of the region will vote for president, vice president, 12 senators, and a party-list.

“Those who signify for absentee voting are Cebu City residents who are not registered to vote.” They’re either from Bohol or Negros Oriental, and they’re from different Cebu municipalities,” Parilla said.

He added the city police will only send a small number of officers to secure polling locations for absentee voting, which will take place from Wednesday through Thursday.

Meanwhile, as election day approaches, Parilla said the CCPO and its subordinate units, including the elite Cebu City Mobile Force Company, will be placed on full alert starting Tuesday.

In effect, city cops can no longer take a leave of absence, and the granting of “special credentials” allowing them to leave their stations has been suspended.

The deployment of people who will secure the transit of Vote Counting Machines (VCM) from the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) storage facility to the clustered polling sites in 80 barangays of this city, according to Parilla, is part of the preparations.

According to him, the CCPO will send 900 uniformed officers to different voting places in the 80 barangays here.

There will be no additional funding from other areas, given the city was very tranquil during the previous two national and municipal elections.

Instead, the city police will send 60 officers to the Police Regional Office (PRO-7) who will be deployed to other areas outside of the city, according to Parilla.
