MANILA, Philippines — The country’s vaccine czar has urged the Health Technology Assessment Council (HTAC) to approve the administration of second booster injections to more vulnerable groups as soon as possible and to include other priority groups in their recommendation.

During President Rodrigo Duterte’s Talk to the People on Wednesday, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. of the National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19 cited the need to speed up the vaccination of booster shots for other vulnerable groups such as healthcare workers, senior citizens, and people with comorbidities, citing the threat of waning immunity vaccines and a possible surge in cases.

“Because of the current urgency of the situation, we are pleading with the HTAC to expedite the inclusion of health care professionals, elders, and other vulnerable sectors so po mapataas ang ating bakunahan,” he said.

Galvez suggested that the HTAC and the country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) give second booster doses to abroad Filipino laborers, seamen, and uniformed troops.

“HTAC/FDA should also look into putting sailors, OFWs, and uninformed people on the priority list because of their long deployments to [high-risk] and vulnerable places,” he said.

Since the formal launch on Monday, 2,108 completely vaccinated immunocompromised persons have gotten second booster doses.

In total, 146,227,002 Covid-19 doses have been provided in the Philippines, with 67,640,431 people receiving the full primary series and 13,043,715 people receiving their first booster shots.
