PH wants to work with the EU on expanding maritime cooperation.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Philippine administration wants to work with the European Union to strengthen marine cooperation.

On April 26, during the second Philippine-EU joint committee meeting in Makati, Manila suggested a new marine subcommittee and floated the possibility of expanding cooperation with the EU on maritime jurisdictions, security, ocean governance, shipping, and seafaring.

The two countries also expressed concern over “unilateral acts that undermine peace, security, and stability, as well as the international rules-based system” in a joint statement made on April 27.

In relation to the South China Sea dispute, the two stressed the significance of adhering to international law, notably the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and referred to the historic 2016 Arbitration Award.

In a joint statement, the two countries agreed to “further explore mechanisms for expanding collaboration on the full scope of maritime matters.”

How to improve partnership on environment and climate change, disaster management and preparedness, the fight against illicit, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, connectivity, and science and technology are among the topics highlighted.

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and European External Action Service Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific Gunnar Wiegand led the Philippine and EU delegations, respectively, at the second joint committee, which was held in a hybrid format.

Its major goal was to examine ongoing bilateral cooperation under the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) between the Philippines and the European Union, as well as to consider potential future cooperation efforts.

Last year’s three subcommittee sessions on Trade, Investment, and Economic Cooperation; Good Governance, Rule of Law, and Human Rights; and Development Cooperation resulted in the formation of the joint committee.

In 2023, the next Joint Committee meeting will be held in Brussels.
